ABOUT THE TALK: Of the four species of weaverbirds found in India, the Finn’s Weaver Ploceus megarhynchus is the least known. The species was rediscovered in Kumaon terai in 1959. It is a globally threatened species, listed as Vulnerable by BirdLife International. Distributed very locally, it is an endemic bird of India and Nepal. Dr Rajat Bhargava, an ornithologist, author, photographer and Senior Scientist for the Bombay Natural History Society will be talking about a recent report which documents how the Finn’s Weaver has a small, rapidly declining and severely fragmented population. His report highlights the stresses the species faces and the need for a state-specific Finn’s Weaver Recovery plan.
